Press Yourself: A Jah-sized box of crayons

Reggae music generally does not invite listeners to return to the comforts of childhood. Even if you're not taking the opportunity to get elevate your spirit or just get stoned, a reggae show is clearly no place to break out the fingerpaints and feetie pajamas. Madison's Nama Rupa's  songs fret over everything from spirituality to overdraft charges, so the band isn't necessarily making music for giggles. Still, the genre doesn't entirely rule out some playful gimmickry: During this Friday's show at Mr. Roberts, Nama Rupa will hold a coloring contest, providing crayons and outline copies of the show flier. Adding to the juvenile mood, the flier riffs on the venue's name and envisions a rasta-righteous version of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.

Only Jah knows how the combination of alcohol, irie, and any number of other things will impact the crowd's artistic abilities—"maybe we could have a 'stays in the lines' category, considering the venue," guitarist Jason Himebauch tells The A.V. Club—but prizes will likely include shirts and CDs from the band. And don't just assume that big stripes of green, yellow, and red will give you an unbeatable advantage: "Nama actually prefers purple," Himebauch says.
