Amanda Seyfried joins Joe Wright's Peter Pan

Amanda Seyfried is the latest actor to be cast in Joe Wright’s Peter Pan adaptation. She joins Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, Garrett Hedlund as a not-yet-evil Hook, newcomer Levi Miller as Peter, and the especially questionable Rooney Mara as Native American princess Tiger Lily. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Seyfried will play a character named Mary in this adaptation, which reimagines Peter Pan as a WWII-era orphan who gets kidnapped by pirates.

Much has been made of the fact that Wright billed his adaptation as “international and multiracial,” then proceeded to cast a bunch of white people. With Seyfried in what’s likely to be the last lead role, it’s now become clear that Wright was saving his commitment to diversity for those who won’t be billed above the title. Rounding out the cast are Adeel Akhtar as Smee, Jack Charles as Tiger Lily’s father, Tae-joo Na as Kwahu, Nonso Anozie as Bishop, Kathy Burke as Mother Barnabas, Kurt Egyiawan as Murray, Lewis MacDougall as Nibs, and newcomer Leni Zieglmeier as Wendy Darling. That list could rightly be referred to as “international and multiracial”—although it could also be referred to as a list of “supporting players, not stars,” or as a list of “people whose casting does not make up for the fact that a white woman is playing Tiger Lily.”
