AMC renews its commitment to reality series about weird people in small towns

Small-town America and the salt-of-the-earth, extroverted, fame-seeking caricatures who live there continue to be of endless fascination to AMC, which has issued a second-season renewal to Small Town Security while also picking up another small town-based reality series, Road Show. Much like what Security does for quirky, independent private investigators in rural Georgia, Road Show will do for local talent show contestants, giving them all of the national TV attention they crave while also deriving much of its entertainment out of how desperate they are for that attention.

Each episode will find the show holding open-call auditions for local performers, then picking four of the best/most obviously weird and unwittingly hilarious to follow for a few days while being coached by the show's staff of mentors. They'll then perform in a final local revue, with the winner at last getting a taste of the stardom they've longed for, right before the cameras pack up and leave them to return to their normal lives knowing they've likely peaked forever. Anyway, Road Show joins AMC's growing reality slate that (in addition to the already-renewed Comic Book Men, The Talking Dead, and The Pitch), also includes in-development shows about a family-run freakshow on Venice Beach and a taxidermy competition series, so that kind of tells you where their mind is at right now.
