Blue Jasmine

After taking several European vacations with all his famous friends, Woody Allen is back in America, where the nervous buffalo roam the tastefully appointed wide-open plains, mooing light jazz. Blue Jasmine finds the director in San Francisco, bottling all of his familiar neuroses within the elegant suits of Cate Blanchett, as a woman scorned by her generous yet lying ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) and who’s forced to move in with her bohemian sister (Sally Hawkins) while her life slides even further down the city’s steep hills. If watching Blanchett have a nervous breakdown over how her perfect life is now slightly less perfect doesn’t particularly interest you, consider this: Louis C.K., Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Dice Clay are also here, playing the various working-class “losers” whom Blanchett thinks are beneath her sister. Fun fact: Woody Allen was the original director of The Adventures Of Ford Fairlane. (Additional fun fact: We’re lying.)
