Donkey Kong, Street Fighter II, and Pokémon inducted into Video Game Hall Of Fame

Last week, the World Video Game Hall Of Fame at the Strong Museum Of Play announced its 2017 inductees, and though they don’t get a star-studded ceremony like the inductees at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame do, that doesn’t necessarily mean that this batch of historically important video games are any less worthy of celebration than Pearl Jam or Tupac Shakur. Maybe someday we’ll get celebrities talking about the merits of certain video games at a big event, but for now we’ll have to settle for something a little less flashy.

The names of this year’s inductees come from Game Informer, which reports that the four games joining the Hall Of Fame are Halo: Combat Evolved, Donkey Kong, Pokémon Red/Green (those are the Japanese versions), and Street Fighter II. As we reported back in March, the other finalists include Mortal Kombat, Final Fantasy VII, Portal, and Resident Evil, so this presumably means that the World Video Game Hall Of Fame has now formally declared that the four games chosen for induction are undeniably superior to all of the ones that got passed over—especially Final Fantasy VII.

Previous games honored at the Hall Of Fame include Doom, Grand Theft Auto III, The Oregon Trail, Super Mario Bros., The Legend Of Zelda, Pac-Man, Pong, Sonic The Hedgehog, Space Invaders, World Of Warcraft, and Tetris.
