Garfield Without Garfield’s Thought Balloons is a twist on a twist on the comic strip

Garfield Minus Garfield is funny, but it’s also about five years old, making it ancient in Internet terms. It’s about time, then, that someone came along and put a new spin on the idea of taking Garfield out of Garfield comics. For those unaware, Garfield comics are newspaper comic strips in which a man talks to his cat and nothing is digitally removed for comedic purposes. They’re very weird.

But that brings us to Garfield Without Garfield’s Thought Balloons, a joke that is exactly what it describes. Created by cartoonist Jonathan Wojcik for Bogleech, the comics are a funny and surprisingly novel take on the “Photoshopping Garfield” genre. They work with the idea that Garfield’s owner, Jon Arbuckle, can’t actually hear the things his cat his thinking (because he’s a cat), making his responses even more insane than when he’s talking to nobody in Garfield Minus Garfield. (As commenters have pointed out, this has been done before.)

Wojcik regards this version as the only true, canonical document of the events in Garfield—as the artist explains it, “this is actually the shit this man does with his fucking cat.” That verisimilitude gives GWGTB its own odd feel distinct from Garfield Minus Garfield. You can see the rest of Garfield Without Garfield’s Thought Balloons at the Bogleech Tumblr. [via Boing Boing]

More Great Job, Internet!
