Georgia official calls for criminal investigation into R. Kelly “cult”

It’s been about a month since BuzzFeed published Jim DeRogatis’ latest exposé on the allegedly unseemly behavior of R. Kelly. DeRogatis, a veteran music journalist, was also the first to report on Kelly’s alleged sexual relationships with minors. But in July’s investigative piece, DeRogatis presented even more troubling information regarding the R&B singer’s alleged “cult.” According to parents of the young women purportedly involved, Kelly is holding the alleged victims against their will in his homes in Chicago and Atlanta. In the time since the latest bombshell dropped, there have been denials from both Kelly and one of the women he “lives” with, and Kelly’s tour is going uninterrupted. But that might not be the case for much longer, as BuzzFeed now reports that a Georgia official wants a full investigation of these allegations.

John Eaves is a mayoral candidate in Atlanta, as well as the chairman of the Fulton County Commission. He recently announced that the John Creeks Police Department has put together a file on the matter, which it‘s given to the district attorney. The Fulton County official is now urging the district attorney to “investigate the matter and leave no stone unturned.” Eaves, a former academic and Peace Corps member, doesn’t believe fame or money should put anyone beyond the law. In his statement, Eaves said law enforcement and lawmakers should “not allow our young girls and young women to be preyed upon by predators or anyone who aims to brainwash and strip them of their human dignity and their right to be free.”

Eaves was also involved in the call for canceling R. Kelly’s Atlanta tour date, but that is still set for August 25.
