Hayao Miyazaki to receive lifetime achievement Oscar

Capping off a career that may or may not actually be over, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences has announced that it will give legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki an Honorary Award at the Governor’s Awards this year. Miyazaki, who announced his retirement last fall, only to tease fans with the possibility of his return, is the visionary behind Studio Ghibli, which also may or may not be done.

Miyazaki has only won one Oscar in his celebrated career—a Best Animated Feature award for Spirited Away in 2002. He is also the first Japanese filmmaker to receive the award since Akira Kurosawa, who was honored back in 1990. (Takashi Miike, on the other hand, has yet to win an Oscar, due to the Academy’s long-standing prejudice against blood spray and Claymation vulvas.)
