The Canadian group Musk Ox often runs with the metal pack—and even contributes interludes to the The Serpent & The Sphere, the latest album by darkly progressive metal outfit Agalloch—but the ensemble’s sound is far from thunderous. At least not in the obvious sense. Woodfall, Musk Ox’s upcoming full-length, carries an elegant, chamber-folk air that manages to be earthy and ethereal at the same time. On “Above The Clouds,” which is being debuted here, guitarist and leader Nathanael Larochette and company craft a mini-epic of dusky beauty that saws one second and soothes the next.
Woodfall will be self-released on June 17.
