Movie buffs may remember a time when the neighborhood video store, that rapidly-vanishing pop cultural institution, seemed like a gateway to an infinite number of worlds, each aisle offering customers novel places to explore and fresh sights to see. Now, a team of advertisers-turned-artists known collectively as Dorothy has taken this metaphor and represented it in the most literal way possible with a hyper-detailed map which imagines a city whose thoroughfares and major landmarks, natural and otherwise, have all been named after famous movies. Dorothy’s official web site says that this piece is “loosely based on the style of a vintage Los Angeles street map” and claims that over 900 titles are represented therein. Naturally, the films one will find likely here are those whose titles happen to be the names of streets (Sunset Blvd., Arlington Road), businesses (The Shop Around The Corner, Merlin’s Shop Of Mystical Wonders), and bodies of water (Lake Placid, On Golden Pond). Fans of, say, Citizen Kane or Koyaanisqatsi are out of luck.
