Suggesting this movie about a talking tree and raccoon flying spaceships could end up being sort of weird, HitFix reports that Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy is looking to bring in John C. Reilly in a major role that is still neither tree nor raccoon. An offer is supposedly already out to have Reilly play Rhomann Dey—a character that’s being envisioned as the equivalent of Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson, in that he will be the S.H.I.E.L.D. liaison tasked with overseeing their galaxy-guarding efforts, while occasionally making the quips that help ground all this stuff in relatable humanity.
Of course, there’s also already a lot of confusion about this report, given that, in the comics, Rhomann Dey is not so much the loveable bureaucrat that description seemingly makes him out to be, as much as he is a superpowered space warrior who has his own space team to run in the Nova Corps. Also confusing: assertions that the film’s main villain will be Michael Rooker’s “space pirate” Yondu, despite Yondu being neither villain nor "space pirate," really; that Lee Pace’s still-unknown villain will actually switch sides to become a superhero, all so he can then have his own spinoff film; that the Guardians will also have their own liaison to talk to the other liaisons, possibly played by Alan Rickman, Hugh Laurie, or Ken Watanabe; that… You know what? Never mind. Let’s just watch “Boats 'N Hoes” until this is all officially sorted out.
