After saving HBO from the Harlequin-novel hold of sexy Mormons and sexier vampires, Boardwalk Empire co-creators Martin Scorsese and Terence Winter will re-team on a drama that’s being referred to as History Of Music for the network. The project, described as a “rock ‘n’ roll epic,” follows two friends through four decades in the music business, from the early R&B of yesteryear to modern hip-hop, and originated with a pitch by Mick Jagger for a possible feature film. While that version (which at one time was meant to be fleshed out by The Departed screenwriter William Monahan) never got off the ground, HBO is said to be in talks with Paramount to develop it as a pilot, with Winter drafting the script and Scorsese getting first crack at directing. If all goes as planned, the show should help Scorsese prove his career-long hypothesis that, over 40 years of trying, we’ve never produced a better song than “Gimme Shelter.”
