As the world breathlessly awaits the reveal of the finished, fully licensed commercial that will at last tell them what’s inside a Burger King Chicken Snack Wrap besides implications of racial stereotypes, Mary J. Blige has come forward to offer her own commentary on the ad, which comes layered with three kinds of PR cheese, smothered in the ranch dressing of regret, and wrapped in a flour tortilla of blame. In a statement to TMZ, Blige acknowledges that she can “understand my fans being upset by what they saw,” but assures them that “if you’re a Mary fan, you have to know I would never allow an unfinished spot like the one you saw go out," as all Mary J. Blige fans know she takes her fast-food chicken jingles very seriously, and also the main problem that critics had with the ad was that it felt “unfinished.”
Anyway, that’s why Blige says she never actually signed off on the version everyone saw: “I agreed to be a part of a fun and creative campaign that was supposed to feature a dream sequence. Unfortunately, that's not what was happening in that clip." Hopefully the company's promised revised commercial will make it clear that Blige’s impromptu song about chicken is just the daydream of an ad executive who snaps out of his reverie to realize it’s all probably more trouble than it's worth.
