Read This: Here’s Patton Oswalt's 2007 takedown of the late Fred Phelps

Westboro Baptist Church pastor Fred Phelps died today, and while most people aren’t all that torn up about Phelps’ timely demise, there are a lot of thoughts about the late “religious” figure online. Quite a few people have been referencing Patton Oswalt’s 2007 Spin piece on Phelps, where he argues that the “hate-filled pastor may be the nastiest punk of all.” While the actual article’s not on Spin’s site anymore, it does exist over on Google Books and is well worth a quick read. (Update: It is now. Read it there instead!) Oswalt’s wordsmith tendencies are in full force, as is the comedian’s sharp and smart condemnation of the late pastor’s tendency to picket public funerals with his hateful messages.
