Read This: How same-sex relationships saved The Sims

According to game developer Patrick J. Barrett III in a piece by Simon Parkin at The New Yorker, the long running and acclaimed life/torture house simulator The Sims was inches away from the Electronic Arts chopping block before laziness and an unscripted lesbian kiss saved the whole project.  The article goes in depth with Barrett, who coded both the demo with the kiss and the underlying mechanics that made it happen. It’s an interesting read that provides both some insight into the climate of video game development in 1999 and to what a stand-up dude Will Wright is, even if he did make Spore.
