Roger Ebert may be the subject of movie that Roger Ebert will love

Film critic Roger Ebert has seen and passed judgment on many a movie, yet somehow the filmmakers who have withstood his criticism over the years have never thought to make a movie about Roger Ebert—because what then, smart guy? But that may soon change: Ebert revealed via tweet this morning that Hoop Dreams director Steve James, screenwriter Steven Zaillian, and executive producer Martin Scorsese have teamed up to develop a documentary based on Ebert's memoir Life Itself, in which he recounts his formative years and flourishing relationship with film, on through his development into arguably the world's most famed critic and, of course, his lusty adventures on the high seas. (Okay, maybe not that last part.) Ebert expanded slightly on the project for IFC's Matt Singer, saying, "I'm keeping hands off any involvement, such as with the screenplay, because I don't want to be a third wheel. Whatever they do I will be fascinated." Indeed, he's already given Ebert: The Movie a tentative three-and-a-half stars.
