The Girl

 October 20, 2012

With The Girl, Toby Jones finally gets to reverse his Infamous/Capote curse and see his competing celebrity biopic released first, even if next year's Anthony Hopkins-starring Hitchcock has the benefit of a bigger release, cast, and jowls. Still, even working with comparatively shrunken screens and facial features, Jones has done an admirable job nailing Hitchcock's droll speaking voice and quiet sense of refined, whispery menace—and only in The Girl will you get to see Sienna Miller tortured with live birds, in a recreation of the way Hitchcock himself exacted his own strange revenge on Tippi Hedren. This promises to be a real, melodramatic treat for fans of cinema and sexual harassment.
