The Golden Globes also liked The Social Network, as well as Boardwalk Empire and The Tourist

When it comes to what was worth watching this year, we’ve heard plenty from the American big-city press, but today it’s the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s turn to swoop in like so many international interlopers and take our trophy-lobbing jobs. And of course, this morning’s announcements—presided over by the romantic-comedy-in-the-making ensemble of Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes, and Blair Underwood—held little surprise for anyone who’s paying attention to our own copy-and-paste ceremonies in these very pages, particularly in the locked-in Best Drama categories. But in keeping with the Golden Globes’ looser, more inclusive recognition of comedies, it also managed to sneak in new faces such as Red, The Tourist, Alice In Wonderland, Michael Douglas, and Emma Stone—even creating an awards vortex in which Johnny Depp is competing against himself, which has the potential to tear the very fabric of reality. (Also somewhat earth-shattering: The Coen Bros.’ True Grit was completely ignored in every single category, suggesting either it just didn't measure up, or not enough people have seen it yet.)

On the TV side of things, freshmen shows Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, and The Big C all picked up best drama series nods, and Boardwalk’s Steve Buscemi and Kelly MacDonald, The Big C's Laura Linney, and Covert Affairs' Piper Perabo were all recognized in the acting categories, but otherwise it’s a very familiar list indeed. Once again, Ricky Gervais will preside over the ceremonies on January 16. Check out the complete list of nominees below.
