The X Factor apparently lacked the X factor

Fox has announced that its music reality-show competition The X Factor is cancelled, following the news that the show’s creator and most famous judge, Simon Cowell, is leaving the show. Cowell is returning to Britain to judge the UK’s X Factor, which was just renewed by ITV for its 11th season. The American X Factor never quite got off the ground—viewership dropped off 48 percent between the second and third seasons, and the show never could hold onto its judges long enough to make them into personalities. American Idol and The Voice are now the only two singing reality competitions on network television. Worse, though: Kelly Rowland is out of a job. We will all mourn tonight.
