Yahoo Screen is dead, and it’s probably Community’s fault

As confirmed by Variety, streaming service Yahoo Screen is shutting down, despite premiering a highly anticipated—and surprisingly good—sixth season of Community in 2015, as well as Paul Feig’s well-received sci-fi comedy Other Space. It also had something called Sin City Saints, which was probably either about a sports team or a tattoo parlor. It’s impossible to know for sure.

Really, though, the decision to give Yahoo Screen the digital axe is probably because of shows like Community, not despite them. As we reported back in October, Yahoo lost $42 million through its video division last year, at which time the CFO specifically called out Community for not bringing in as much advertiser money as the company hoped it would. Variety‘s report doesn’t specifically blame Community for killing an entire streaming service, but all of that money it lost must have factored into the decision.

Now, Yahoo Screen may be dead (and it will be dearly missed), but its precious content will live on, buried in the various sections on the normal Yahoo site. Variety notes that any streamed concerts, for example, will now appear under Yahoo’s music section instead of on Yahoo Screen. As for Community, it’s now located in the TV section, and all you need to do in order to watch it is go to Yahoo, click “More Yahoo Sites,” click “TV,” click the ellipses under the search bar, and then click “Watch Community.” It’s as easy as one, two, three…and then four and five, which isn’t really that much worse from when it was on Yahoo Screen.
