The Afghan Whigs cover Frank Ocean, add U.S. tour dates
Cincinnati alt-rockers The Afghan Whigs have decided to temporarily sate everyone’s post-Pitchfork, pre-Lollapalooza malaise by recording a cover of R&B wunderkind Frank Ocean’s song “Lovecrimes” and releasing the song as a download on their website.
Since they started touring again in May, the Whigs have covered “Lovecrimes” regularly in concert. The studio recording of the song represents the second new song the band has released since they officially reunited in December 2011.
The band has also added six more stateside stops on their already extensive tour schedule, which started in May with an appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and will continue into November. In between, they'll perform at Lollapalooza in August—where, notably, Frank Ocean is also appearing.
The band are no strangers to cross-genre covers. Its previous post-hiatus release was a cover of funk legend Marie “Queenie” Lyons’ “See and Don’t See,” and its 1992 release Uptown Avondale was made up of mostly old soul covers.
