David Lynch Good Day Today/All I Know
David Lynch has made music for years one way or other, most notably as producer of Julee Cruise’s Floating Into The Night in 1989; its track “Falling” became the Twin Peaks theme. Last year’s Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse album featured Lynch on its standout cut, which seems to have emboldened him to step out with what they used to call a maxi-single, in which a slew of remixes follow “Good Day Today” and “All I Know,” two songs made entirely by Lynch.
Both songs are, in different ways, exactly the kind of music a Lynch fan might expect him to make. “Good Day Today” is strange, bouncy, silly, and a little manic. He processes his vocal completely, so it sounds like a 65-year-old kid gargling. “All I Know” is swamp blues, festooned with clanking percussion (of course he’s musical kin with Tom Waits) and a heavily distorted, pinched vocal that transmits the curious mix of play and menace at work in his movies.
Rounding it out are remixes from a number of club luminaries. “Good Day” is rewired by Underworld (frisky, slinky house), Boys Noize (brittle electro), and DiskJokke (frosty, sweeping electro-house). “All I Know” is tweaked by Sasha (surprisingly dark and loose-limbed), Simon Ratcliffe of Basement Jaxx (intense, noisy house), Skream (dank digital dub), and Jon Hopkins (a pumped-up version of the sludgy original). It’s a smorgasbord rather than a cohesive work, but such is the nature of maxi-singles.
