Hey, did you know The A.V. Club has seven local sites? Every day, writers in Austin, Chicago, Denver, Madison, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and the Twin Cities are posting about music, films, and other events and news happening in their cities. Whether you live in one of these cities or elsewhere, there’s plenty of great local stuff that’s worth a look. Here’s a round-up of what caught our attention this week.
• Austin prepared for this weekend’s alleged Rapture by putting together a list of rapture-related entertainment, because we may as well go out entertained, right?
• The Twin Cities enjoyed this slice of rainbow in which GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich gets “glittered.”
• Philadelphia talked with Ben Zimmer, On Language columnist for The New York Times, to school the rest of us on the etymology of the word “jawn.”
• Denver watched Wild Zero, the zombie film starring the Japanese rockers in Guitar Wolf, and teased out some crucial lessons to be learned from the film (perhaps in case this weekend’s Rapture turns out to be the zombie apocalypse).
• Chicago took note of a new cost-cutting law making it legal to eat roadkill in Illinois, much to the delight of slack-jawed yokels across the state.
• Milwaukee chatted with Alan Palomo, the brains behind Neon Indian.
• Madison discovered that besides having a blood lust for crushing unions, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker also has a hankerin’ for ham-and-cheese sandwiches—14,000 of them, to be precise.
