Bad news: Garry Shandling's groundbreaking HBO sitcom The Larry Sanders Show remains incomplete on DVD, with only a best-of and a Season One set currently available. Good news: Shandling's groundbreaking Showtime sitcom It's Garry Shandling's Show will be available in a complete 72-episode set from Shout! Factory on October 20th. A curious mix of post-modernism and homage, It's Garry Shandling's Show aired from 1987 to 1990 and starred Shandling as a stand-up comic with a full complement of wacky friends of neighbors (shades of Seinfeld, except that Shandling's Show debuted three years earlier), all of whom were fully aware that they were living inside of a sitcom and would frequently comment on the conventions, the studio audience, et cetera. Less radical than wry, It's Garry Shandling's Show reaffirmed the power of hoary show business forms to bring order to the chaos of modern life. It'll be nice to revisit it--in full!--on what's sure to be a features-packed 16-disc set.
