Sometimes torture can be so dreary. If only there were some way to liven it up--hey, how 'bout a mix tape, courtesy of those party-starters in the U.S. military? Mother Jones has compiled a torture playlist comprising songs used in military prisons "to induce sleep deprivation, 'prolong capture shock,' disorient detainees during interrogations–and also drown out screams."
Many of the pop-centric selections--from the likes of Christina Aguilera, David Gray, and Matchbox 20--suggest that corporate FM radio is programmed by sadists, though a few particularly fiendish selections--The Barney theme song, Neil Diamond's "America"--take soul crushing to a whole new level.
