A Minute Jack Forum obviously thought long and hard about its 2010 debut, Traction Blip, and not just because it took the band five years to finally get a record out. Songs like “Segue” wind on at great length and encompass so many musical aspirations—threatening to derail but always regaining structure just in time—that it’s clear that founding members Brian Thorpe and Matt Duranceau were careful to squeeze all their influences in without completely sacrificing the focus of their tunes. Stately vocals defy genre categorization on “No Consolation,” with a great deal of help from sprinklings of blues riffs, Spanish guitar, ghostly back vocals, martial beats, and walking bass. The lines where one song ends and another begins may be blurred, but the fact that these are songs with purpose never fades.
