Across Tundras
A s befits a band whose name conjures images of vast space and glacial migration, Across Tundras has trekked across America’s breadbasket since its inception, making its home first in the high country of Denver and now in the flood plains of Tennessee. The constant has been singer-guitarist Tanner Olsen’s conflicting lust for both emptiness and heaviness. On the group’s 2009 full-length, Herds Of The Fathomless Valleys, epic Americana locks horns with elemental drone metal. And as a surprise, the disc contains covers of both Pink Floyd and Nick Cave—although live, Across Tundras’ individual songs meld into a prolonged, mesmeric hum.
