Artist Amarcord

  • Amarcord

Equal parts ribald and magical, Federico Fellini’s 1973 coming-of-age story Amarcord revisits his adolescence in a small town in fascist Italy. A year in the life of the villagers in fictional Borgo (Fellini’s stand-in for his hometown Rimini), the film is anchored by pedantic narrator known only as The Lawyer, who oversees a parade of characters ranging from teenager Titta (Fellini’s alter ego) and his foul-tempered Socialist father to a flighty hairdresser and even a midget nun. All of them are given to childish vulgarity, outlandish sexual fantasies, and general foolishness, but Fellini handles the satire with a loving touch, balancing it with moments of breathtaking beauty that make his most personal film one of his absolute best.
