American Madness
Most people think of Frank Capra as a filmmaker who aimed to discover the best in people even in the face of cynicism and hard times, and while 1932’s American Madness shares the optimism of It’s A Wonderful Life, its grim humor and chaos make for a harsher experience. A robbery, a run, and a hostile board of directors converge on Depression-era banker Walter Huston, fueled by frantic rumors that allow Capra to cast even the common man in a critical light.
