Artist Ani DiFranco

Ani DiFranco has fashioned a remarkable career as a songwriter—a guise in which she can be both vulnerable and strong—and as the head of Righteous Babe, the independent label she has stuck to even when the possibility of stardom beckoned. And not just any career as a songwriter, but a prolific one at that: Since 1990’s self-titled release, DiFranco has put out 18 LPs, a big handful of live albums, and three EPs. After years of near-constant touring, DiFranco remains an unforgettable live force, ready to fall to pieces or stir disciples who follow her every move. Her latest effort is 2012’s ¿Which Side Are You On?, released in January.
