Ari Herstand specializes in looping guitar, trumpet, keyboard, vocals, and beatboxing onstage to build his songs without the help of a band. Unfortunately the beatboxing often comes first in his formulas, which puts it front and center while he agonizes over adding the other elements and gives the audience plenty of time to realize that Herstand is no Doug E. Fresh. The mop-topped Minneapolis native—who now lives in L.A.—means well, and the goofball energy that he pours into his stage performance can be extremely infectious. On this year’s Clean Up EP he gives the fresh beats a bit of a break, opting for more soul-showing acoustic songs like the title track, and it suits him and his delicate voice well.
