As I Lay Dying
When San Diego’s As I Lay Dying emerged at the precipice of early ’00s metalcore, it seemed like just another would-be in a black abyss of meaty guitars and screamy vocals. But the band’s unyielding sophomore effort, 2003’s Frail Words Collapse, asserted otherwise. The album—and specifically the single “Forever,” still its most recognizable song—was a brawny meld of chunky metal and riffing melody, winning over many diehards of the genre. (The MTV rotations certainly helped as well.) Subsequent albums, like 2007’s Grammy-nominated An Ocean Between Us, 2010’s The Powerless Rise, and this year’s Decas compilation have further cemented As I Lay Dying as a steadily maturing metal act.
