Ashley Gold
In one sense, Twin Cities singer-songwriter Ashley Gold is refreshing. She doesn’t pander to the veiled, sometimes dubious artiness peddled by her peers–she’s a balls-out pop vocalist. Gold falls firmly in the Adele camp, with a confident voice that has plenty of soul, jazz, and blues swagger. The young songstress could do some damage on American Idol, but the self-framed poet is sorely lacking in the lyrical department. Lines like “It takes two to tango,” “Let’s call a spade a spade,” and other clichéd clunkers litter Gold’s lyric sheet. She’s a lively performer, but certainly no poet. Bonus surprise: Gold occasionally raps!
