Asleep At The Wheel may never match the breakthrough success it enjoyed in the ’70s, but that hasn’t stopped the band—specifically, frontman Ray Benson and a revolving cast—from continuing to champion country music’s cheerful cousin, Western swing. Over the past four decades, the group has released albums at an astonishing pace, racking up nine Grammys and plenty of collaborators in the process. In 2009, the Austin-based group teamed with Willie Nelson on Willie And The Wheel, and last year’s It’s A Good Daypairs the group with Leon Rausch, who played with Western swing innovator Bob Wills in The Texas Playboys.
