It’s smart to pick a strong theme when your act’s an unwieldy hybrid of old-timey string band and spring-heeled variety-show comedy. On 2008’sWhat? And Give Up Show Biz?, Asylum Street Spankers affectionately satirized the life of a touring band, while 2009’s God’s Favorite Band began with an acoustic instrumental tribute to bluesman Blind Willie Johnson, before plunging headlong into gypsy jazz, folk spirituals, and even a Gershwin tune. But there comes a time to hang up the fiddles, washboard, and mandolin: Following some intra-band drama, the group launched its current string of dates, the Spanks For Everything! farewell tour.
