It’s funny to think that everyone thought Coldplay was so wimpy when it blew up in 2001. Chris Martin and crew sound like pure evil compared with most of the acts that first gained attention by tailoring songs for the “powerful” scenes on Grey’s Anatomy, including Augustana. The San Diego band hit it big with “Boston” and hasn’t looked back—though it’s arguable it’s continued looking east. 2011’s Augustana recasts the band in the mold of working-class, Atlantic Coast heroes like Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen, full of heart-in-throat numbers that never quite reach the heights of Turnstiles or Born To Run, but could at least rock a tidied-up, alternate universe version of The Stone Pony.
