Artist Awesome Color

When it comes to garage rock, imitation is always the sincerest form of flattery (which is an easy way of explaining why every singer on the first disc of Nuggets who isn't Roky Erickson sounds like they're channeling either Bob Dylan or Mick Jagger), and Awesome Color has flattered plenty. The Ecstatic Peace-signed Detroiters added both an Alice Cooper shtick and a take on label boss Thurston Moore's resigned drawl to its repertoire on the recent Massa Hypnosis, but Awesome Color remains at its best when it's sharpening the teeth—and chops—of The Stooges and The MC5. In concert, the band launches a fuzzed-out assault, reclaiming the raunchiness of its forebears for the present day.
