Baby Dee
With her origins as a street musician who played harp in Central Park while wearing a bear costume, as a Coney Island sideshow performer, and as the organist and music director at a Catholic church in the Bronx, Baby Dee didn’t release her debut recording (2000’s Little Windows) until she was in her 40s. She’s since worked with David Tibet of Current 93, Antony Hegarty, and Andrew W.K., who is the producer of her new Drag City LP,Regifted Light. To keep the spotlight on the singular warmth of her voice and her powerful piano playing, additional instrumentation is minimal throughout the album. An exception is made on “Yapapipi,” though, for which an arsenal of small percussion instruments, horns, and cello creates a sonic landscape bustling with celebration and deep reflection.
