Americana is a genre that’s now synonymous with haggard knockaround guys, nostalgic ex-punks, and stoned, out-of-work Philosophy majors who just want to have a good time. In short, it’s a pretty melancholy affair a lot of the time. Barehand Jugband, however, is all about the party. Combining old-timey jug band blues with high energy rhythms, the Chicago-based sextet is out to make audiences get up and dance rather than cry in their beer. The band’s album Always A Bridesmaid captures its country party vibe, including backwoods instrumentation like washboard and jug with the gleeful sting of things as farfetched as kazoos. Missing the band’s party would not be advised, especially since it recently announced its break-up. Too much of a good thing, maybe?
