Big Gigantic
Dropping saxophone in the middle of your songs is like the musical equivalent of splitting an atom: It can either result in total annihilation of the whole tune or serve as a nearly endless source of energetic inspiration. Dominic Lalli, producer and sax master of Colorado’s Big Gigantic, intertwines his funky, jazz-informed techno with seemingly dangerous levels of saxophone. On the group’s 2010 full-length debut, A Place Behind The Moon, his palatable smooth-jazz stylings circled the spaced-out beats, providing a sense of homebound nostalgia. That same blueprint drives the new LP, Nocturnal. The record’s title track is laced with thick, jazzy sax riffs, which fans might be into but might seem schlocky as hell to casual listeners.
