Bill Callahan
Beginning his musical career with unabashed, confrontational classics of lo-fi indie like The Doctor Came At Dawn and Red Apple Falls, Bill Callahan’s move to Austin, Texas has prompted some major changes for the artist formerly known as Smog. Slowly loosening his hold over the control and production of his records, Callahan has emerged with an increasingly forthright and (gasp!) even optimistic approach. Despite its gloomy title, his 2011 Drag City release, Apocalypse, is a collection of expanded ruminations on country and the natural world that are as unhurried and breezy as the Smog discography is compressed and isolated.
