Like a pipeline sucking up all the filthy silt accumulated at the Mississippi Delta and spraying it back into the crowd with fire-hose force, Tennessee blues grinders Black Diamond Heavies take the unbeaten path to the crossroads, chewing up all the scenery along the way. The Hammond organ and drums set-up—the group didn’t bother replacing its guitarist after he amicably quit—provides plenty of bash and crash to go along with John Wesley Myers’ cartoonish, Louis Armstrong-style growls on tracks like “Poor Brown Sugar” off of 2007’s Every Damn Time. Last year’s Alive As Fuck concert recording provides a more accurate picture of the live experience, which completely annihilates any limitations in the group’s sound by turning the volume way up and pouring out all the mud, puke, blood, and sweat the band can drudge up from the blues swamp.
