Black Tusk
Black Tusk is a band set up for easy comparisons: It plays sludgy crust-metal and hails from Savannah, Ga.—which pretty much translates to “sounds like Kylesa.” Its Relapse debut, this year’s Taste The Sin, even features artwork by Baroness’ John Dyer Baizley, furthering Black Tusk’s reputation as yet another gloomy Southern metal band. This isn’t to say that Black Tusk can’t stand on its own merits, just that it hasn’t so far. Taste The Sin is a straightforward effort, an unadorned album of heavy blast beats and growling dual vocals. Black Tusk can certainly keep up with the pack; maybe on its next record, it'll make a run for the lead.
