Artist Black-Eyed Snakes

The volume-cranking on Low’s recent albums might have been shocking if leader Alan Sparhawk hadn’t already signaled that his melancholy minimalist side was matched by a raucous rockin’ one via his side project Black-Eyed Snakes, whose potent, distorted blues-rock is much closer to Jon Spencer than Low's spare minimalism. (Sparhawk’s other main side project, Retribution Gospel Choir, also leans in that direction.) Sparhawk leads Black-Eyed Snakes under the name Chicken-Bone George, and over the course of two albums, he and the Snakes slither through foot-stomping tunes that sound as muddy, dark, and deadly as a downed power line in a Louisiana swamp. The Snakes also have a DVD, Cross Country With The Snakes, in which director Hansi Johnson combines their music with, oddly enough, cross-country skiing.
