Silkworm drummer Michael Dahlquist died in a car crash in 2005, and the Chicago band’s remaining members, Andy Cohen and Tim Midgett, returned with a searing ache on Hammer Of The Gods, the 2007 debut from their new band, Bottomless Pit. They’ve kept some of Silkworm’s stark guitar crunch and sympathetic-yet-pathological songwriting, but here it’s almost better for nursing wounds than for rocking. Still, those patient washes of distorted guitars are plenty satisfying on both 2008’s Congress EP and their latest effort, the excellent Blood Under The Bridge. With jams like the chugging “Winterwind” and painfully plaintive “Summerwind,” it’s a shame more people aren’t absolutely obsessed with these dudes.
