Artist Brazilian Girls

Brazilian Girls got a lot of attention for a self-titled debut put out by Verve, and it’s never smart to bet against lounge-y cosmopolitanism—think nicely produced house, dub, and bossa nova. In true indie fashion, none of the members are actually from Brazil, but keyboardist and accomplished composer-arranger Didi Gutman gets bonus points for at least coming from somewhere close—Argentina. The group’s latest, 2008's New York City, wisely sticks to showcasing lead singer Sabina Sciubba’s breathy, Marlene Dietrich-like hushed vocals while keeping the dance-floor rhythms bumping along.
