HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist Brett Dennen

The minor protest songs and all-purpose laments of Brett Dennen’s early records positioned the singer-songwriter as the Bruce Springsteen of the post-John Mayer set. He’s still singing in the same, high-but-sandpapery tones on 2011’s Loverboy, but the record continues the “maturation through sedation” pattern of 2008’s Hope For The Hopeless. And while Loverboy’s live-band feel and surprisingly convincing splashes of soul and reggae might convert some skeptics, more lasting conversions happen at Dennen’s concerts. There, the lanky redhead’s grassroots following hangs on his every joyous twitch, goofy dance move, and coffeehouse-Bono hand gesture.
