Artist Bride Of Frankenstein

  • Bride Of Frankenstein

The 1935 sequel Bride Of Frankenstein has plenty of fun playing up the clichés created by its progenitor just four years earlier. Director James Whale opens this second go-round with a self-referential framing scene of Mary Shelley explaining what happened after the windmill fire that ended Frankenstein: While the Monster escapes for further rampaging, Dr. Frankenstein’s former mentor whips up a lady friend for him in the lab. Played again by Boris Karloff with a pathos that belies the sly humor at work, the monster is genuinely saddened when his white-streak-coiffed mate rejects him.
