Brightblack Morning Light is big on ritual—not to mention preoccupied with the healing power of crystals, psychedelic experiences, shamanism, and the New Mexico desert. The quiet—sometimes catatonic—duo’s sound is hypnotic: Thick swaths of gospel, soul, blues, and funk are summoned up to sit hazily over the crowd. Vocals are almost whispered, and the cymbals never crash, only sizzle gently in the mix. It all makes for a quietly dark, sleepy-stoned kind of Americana: road music for the desert campfire suited for every night of the trip.
