Artist Broken Gold

  • Broken Gold Autumn Spadaro

The details of guitarist Ian MacDougall’s 2009 bicycle accident have led plenty of stories about Riverboat Gamblers in the past two years. It’s only appropriate that an account of the incident also leads Recovery Journal, the latest full-length from the MacDougall-led side project Broken Gold. Over the course of 10 propulsive pub-rock anthems, the frontman fights through various emotional and physical hangovers, singing in a rallying rasp pitched somewhere between Paul Westerberg’s blue-collar weariness and Joe Strummer’s street-smart snarl. There’s a touch of Springsteen-like desperation to numbers like “Locked Out” and “Bottom Of The Pool,” too, but with Recovery Journal committed to tape, it’s clear Broken Gold has a solid grasp on its runaway Austinian dream.
